Over the last month or so, I have been stalking, I mean following Brian Mackey on Twitter. @Brianmackeynyc. Brian, Is an accomplished singer/songer writer in NYC.
I reached out to him to write a review about him, and of course he jumped right on it! Or I should say Twittered away on it lol. From the Direct Messages, to the emails it has taught me a lot about him that I never knew before. But I can say from my own stand point that he takes the time to get to know and talk to his fans. He has a Bob Dylan feel to him.
Mackey’s songs, including “Color Blue” and “Honest Love,” have also been sought out for use in motion pictures The Boys of Abu Ghraib, starring Sara Paxton (Last House on the Left) and Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings); 29,000 Wishes, 1 Regret, directed by Oliver Robins (Poltergeist); Fake; and Fathoms Deep.
Brian has performanced at famed venues across the country: NYC favorites Highline Ballroom, Mercury Lounge, The Bitter End, and Gavin DeGraw’s National Underground, as well as Nashville’s Bluebird Cafe, L.A.’s Hotel Café and Austin’s SXSW Music Festival. With more dates listed this year, you’ll be sure to hear him.
I found out about him in 2010. His song called “Honest Love” caught on right away. Here is the famous Honest Love video – If you have not heard his songs before, now would be a great time to go and listen to them.
He also has more videos on YouTube as well from another interview where you can clearly see he loves to joke around, showing his softer side of himself.
I decided the best way for you to get to know him better was to ask some questions. Some of the questions are tame and some are right on out there.
Here is what he had to say:
What is your nationality?
I am Irish and Hungarian. Therefore I’m a hungry Irishman.
Where were you born and where do you live now?
I was born in NJ, shipped off to Florida. I am between NYC and Nashville.
Do you have a favorite joke you like to tell?
I think that’s like asking someone if they have a Favorite kid, so I’m told I’m constantly saying something funny. But I usually make observations about life, and that is sometimes funny. Like can a Pegasus poop a rainbow?
What hidden talents do you have?
I love to cook which is unusual, and I love to work on cars. And I’m a bit of a maintenance man. I’m also an amateur helicopter pilot in the house.
If you could dabble in any other genre what would it be?
Heavy metal……………………..Just kidding Classical music.
Brian’s influences are as varied as his inspirations. Mackey, a classical pianist, loves modern masters Bob Dylan and The Beatles as much as composers Mozart and Beethoven.
The most asked question to date…. Boxers/ Briefs?
Boxers! I need lots of room…
How many licks does it take to get to the middle of a tootsie pop?
One strong bite! Then you’re off to the dentist to get a filling.
I reckon it takes about 110 licks. (Want to challenge Brian to a “Lick Off” just let me know)
What are some of your pet peeves?
Phonies, mayonnaise, unsanitary food practices, high gas prices, high prices in general, people that Impede on other people’s freedoms, people that are cruel to animals, children, or other people.
Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.
I got some pretty nice shows coming up and more are being added, some include, Atlanta, GA, Toronto, Canada, Houston, TX, Johnson City, TN, and you should be there because I can’t think of anything else you should do with your time.
